The Kenya Meteorological Service says October marks the beginning of the short rains season that lasts from October, November to December.

Owing to the presence of El Nino conditions in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, that is influencing the buildup in moisture, the season will continue into January next year.

“Isolated storms are likely to occur in some areas including the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and North-eastern Kenya,” says the statement signed by the Deputy Director of Kenya Meteorological Service Kennedy Thiong’o.

Among the Counties that are expected to experience heavy rainfall during the week include; Murang’a, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, parts of Samburu county, parts of Marsabit county around Moyale, Mandera and the northern part of Wajir county.

The statement indicates that high average daytime temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius are expected over several parts of the country including the Coastal, Northeastern and North-western Kenya, while a few areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time temperatures of below 10 degrees Celsius.

“In Kisumu maximum (day-time) temperatures will be as high as 30 degrees Celsius with minimum temperatures of up to 18 degrees Celsius,” says the statement by the Deputy Director of Meteorological Services and added that, “Narok maximum (day-time) temperatures will rise to 28 degrees Celsius while minimum (night-time) temperatures will drop to 10 degrees Celsius.”

As the season begins, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi the onset of the rainfall is expected beginning the second week to the third week of October and will continue into January next year.

North-eastern Kenya counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo the onset of the short rains season is in the third to fourth week of October to January next year as well as the South-eastern lowlands of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta.

The Coastal region counties of Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale the season began in the fourth week of September to the first week of October and continues into January.

Already the western part and the Lake Basin region of Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot had their onset in the September and the season continues into January next year.
