NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 6 – Opposition leader Raila Odinga now wants victims of the Embakasi gas blast awarded Sh500,000 each by the government.

While accusing the government of negligence, Odinga said the accident could not have been stopped if the law and all regulations were followed.

At least six people died when a gas plant in the middle of a residential estate exploded on Thursday night, leaving over 300 others injured.

The owner of the plant, Derick Kimathi, and three officials from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) – Derrick Kimathi, Joseph Makau, David Walunya Ong’are and Marrian Mutete Kioko – accused of issuing him with a licence were arrested and arraigned in court on Tuesday but no charges were read to them.

Police have indicated that they are investigating murder, and negligence among other crimes before they can file charges.
