NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 11 — A photo of an elderly man circulating on social media purportedly showing the oldest man in the country, is false.
The picture allegedly showing the man celebrating his 146th birthday has elicited a lot of reaction in several Facebook accounts where it has been posted.
An account on Facebook by the name Kenya Kwanza TV posted the picture which has attracted 18,000 thousand likes, 201 shares and 1,600 comments saying “Meet Mzee John Kiplagat from Nandi, arguably the oldest man in Kenya. Born in 1876, he celebrated 146 years on earth a few days ago.”
Several Facebook accounts have shared the picture widely with netizens on social media sending birthday wishes and congratulating the old man for aging gracefully.
One Kenya TV, an account on Facebook also posted the photo of the old man which also attracted a lot of attention with 9,900 likes with 234 shares.
However, a Google reverse search on the image showed an image of the man in question was first published by Alamy, a stock photography website.
The picture was taken in Seragen, Central Java, Indonesia in December 2016.

In the picture description, the man has been identified as “Mr Sodimejo known as Mbah Goto” was photographed during a celebration to mark 146 years.
