NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 2 — The government is banking on 23 virtual weighbridge stations across the country to manage high road maintenance costs.
Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said Friday that Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has been closely monitoring the stations from the KeNHA Data Operations Centre.
“Today, I visited the KeNHA Data Operations Centre at Barabara Plaza to check on their operations. This center is crucial in capturing axle load data, which assists in enforcing penalties for overload offenses,” he said following a visit to the Data Operations Centre.
Murkomen said the intelligent monitoring systems capture real-time data that is fundamental in informing road efficiencies across major roads in the country.
“The government is implementing intelligent monitoring systems on our major roads. These systems capture real-time data that helps inform road efficiencies across the country,” he stated.
Murkomen has asserted that the system will be crucial in effectively monitoring and capturing overload offenders.
The CS further stated that the system is a stride toward the implementation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) across the country, which will help curb road offenses and save lives.
“As a Ministry, we are investing in technology to enhance early detection of incidences and mitigate violations within the road network,” he said.
